Reading Program's for Summer

I wanted to get in a blog before my two youngest children begin their summer vacations from school, their last day is Thursday. It's hard to believe the school year is over already.I know how busy summers can be and keeping kids entertained is another job in it's self! I work from home, as I am a full time writer, and I also organize all of my church's youth activities, as the head youth pastor.  I found some ideas I wanted to share for "things to do" this summer, as you will see below.

Book News:
I am currently writing my next YA novel Unspeakable Things, which I blogged in detail about in my last post and I am extremely happy on the progress of the novel. I also look forward to assisting One Spirit with a cut of my books sales and promoting their wonderful cause to help the Indian's of Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. This is book and project are very dear to me and I cannot wait to share it with all of my readers. I will be sharing some quotes from the novel in progress on my Face Book author page this week, here is the link if you would like to stop by and "like" the page! -https://www.facebook.com/pages/Author-Heather-McBride/120173178069694 I have been asked by several readers if I could do that, and happily I plan to!

Also I am in the negotiation phase of working with a new Editor, and I'm very excited about it. I will share more about that when we have finalized things, but she's super cool!

On to my next Blog Topic:
I was surfing Face Book this morning when I saw the old  "Book It" pin we received when I was in elementary school. The Blog tied to this pic is- Simply Insider,an inside glimpse of all things simply youth ministry- http://www.simplyinsider.com/2012/05/21/the-student-challenge/#comment-1183
We got stars on a button, like the one below, and when we got 5-stars we got a FREE personal pan pizza!
I had forgotten all about that reading program until today, thus starting my research, and finding a reading program recommendation for Youth Ministry leaders on Simply Insider today. I love this idea, for my own kids and the kids of my youth group at church. Reading is such a vital part of our world and society, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a writer....ok..ok maybe I am a little bit partial to books...:)

I plan on setting up a reading program this summer for Mountain Baptist Youth Ministry, with a reward of the good old Pizza party night when they complete their reading toward the end of the summer. I do hope to have some faith based books listed for the program and books with good moral values and lessons, naturally!

I wanted to share this with all the parents who read my blog as an idea for their kids, and possibly another good idea would be to mention this to your youth pastors, or check with your local library for summer reading programs to join. Pottery Barn is also hosting a reading program, I have the link here for those of you wanting to learn more about them too. http://www.potterybarnkids.com/design-studio/articles/summer-reading-challenge.html

I hope the reading program ideas are helpful to some of you, in making your summers a little less hectic!
